Greater Sign On Keyboard (2024)

In the vast landscape of a computer keyboard, certain keys command immediate attention. The letters, numbers, and the powerful Enter key are obvious stars. Yet, nestled in the bottom-right corner, often sharing a key with its sibling, the period, lies an unassuming but indispensable character: the greater-than sign ( > ). While it may appear simple, this symbol is a cornerstone of mathematics, programming, and digital communication, and knowing how to produce it efficiently is a fundamental digital skill. The Anatomy of the Key On a standard US QWERTY keyboard, the greater-than sign is not a primary key. Instead, it shares a single key with the period ( . ), located to the right of the comma ( M key on most layouts). The period is the primary function, while the greater-than sign is the shifted function, printed above the period on the keycap. To type > , one must press and hold the Shift key (either left or right) and then press the period key .
