The first clue—Big Rock—was easy. But instead of a treasure, they found a tin box wedged in a crack. Inside: a single key on a rusted ring and a handwritten note that said, “Not all who wander are lost. But you might be. Follow the creek where the cattails bow.”

The creek was low from summer heat, but cattails lined its banks like soldiers. Hailey noticed that about fifty yards upstream, a cluster of them leaned noticeably east, as if bent by a persistent wind. The letter read: “To the finder—You’ve done what I never could. You followed the trail past fear, past doubt, past every voice that said turn back. This isn’t my treasure. It’s yours. The journal holds all the places I wanted to explore but never had the courage to go. Go there for me. And leave something behind for the next dreamer.” But you might be
