A subplot involving a young thief (Angus) nearly hanged for stealing a goat. Colum MacKenzie (Gary Lewis) delivers a chilling masterclass in feudal justice—merciful yet absolute. The WEB-DL captures the texture of wet wool, mud, and the noose’s hemp. This scene serves as world-building: law here is not written but embodied in one man’s voice.
Flaws: The plague-of-the-week structure feels a bit “medical drama dropped into history.” Some may miss the novel’s deeper dives into Gaelic folklore. And Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) is curiously sidelined—he gets two short scenes, mostly glowering.
If you came for the sweeping romantic vistas of Episode 1, this feels like a detour. It is. But it’s the necessary dark corridor before the castle’s next hall.
Late evening, with no subtitles on first viewing (let the Gaelic wash over you), then a second pass with commentary. The episode rewards slow looking.
