Michael’s first night is nearly fatal. He insults a powerful inmate named (a charming but vicious white supremacist) to avoid appearing weak. Later, in the showers, T-Bag and his crew corner Michael with a shank. But Michael reveals a hidden razor blade in his mouth and threatens to slit T-Bag’s carotid. T-Bag, impressed, backs off. Reunion with Lincoln Michael is finally taken to death row to see Lincoln. The brothers embrace through the bars. Lincoln is shocked. “What are you doing in here?” Michael whispers: “I’m getting you out.”
Now inside the prison’s intake unit, Michael is strip-searched. The guards notice his intricate tattoo and joke about it. But one sharp-eyed guard, (head of the prison’s tactical team), stares at it suspiciously. Inside Fox River Michael is assigned to general population. He immediately begins observing: the guard rotations, the blind spots, the plumbing. He asks quiet questions—who runs the infirmary? Where is the pipe that leads to the infirmary wall? He also studies the daily routine of John Abruzzi , the mob boss who runs the prison’s PI (Prison Industries) crew.
