The plan was absurdly simple: slip the guard a doctored coffee during the 2 a.m. shift change, use the magnetic shim he’d carved from a melted lighter to pop the vent grate, and crawl three hundred feet through the dark, rust-lined throat of the prison’s guts. He’d emerge in the laundry’s drainage culvert, which emptied into the river just beyond the outer fence.
