One sequence—a 360-degree pan around a weeping willow tree as the heroine decides to die—is a shot that Mizoguchi himself would have envied. Tazuko Mineno retired from film in 1941, married, and ran a small grocery store in Yokohama until her death in 1989. She never gave an interview. She never protested her erasure.
