In 1928, Bhagat Singh and his associates, Sukhdev and Rajguru, planned to assassinate John Saunders, the police superintendent of Lahore, who was responsible for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, a prominent freedom fighter. On December 17, 1928, they successfully executed the plan, but in a case of mistaken identity, they killed John Saunders instead of the intended target.
