Marco laughed. “That was one time.”
She was laughing. Actually laughing. Her head tipped back, her shoulders loose, her hand pressed to her chest like she was trying to hold the feeling in. She looked—there was no other word for it— alive .
“Did it work?”
“Rough night?” asked the bartender, a woman named Sage with silver rings on every finger. She was the only person in L.A. who called Lena by her first name without making it sound like a question.
What she did not have, at 1:17 in the morning, was any idea what to do with the rest of the night. The show was over. Tomorrow’s tasks were already scheduled. She could go home, wash her face in exactly seven steps, and lie in bed staring at the ceiling until sleep came.
Then the reality TV star started crying on camera. Not a bit. Real crying. Something about her childhood dog.
