Dexter watched from the tower as it swallowed the harbor, the bait shop, the diner, the stilt houses. It didn't crash—it climbed , a liquid landslide pushing through streets, lifting cars like leaves. He heard screams swallowed by the roar. Then silence, except for the deep groaning of water finding its new level.

Then the ocean withdrew.
