The next morning, Leo did what any logical homeowner would do: he called three companies and clutched his coffee like a stress ball.

Leo stared at his notes. Three numbers. Three philosophies. None of them included the word “cheap.”

At noon, he drilled into the outer pane. The sound was awful—like scratching a blackboard with a fork. He poured alcohol into the void, watched it slosh against the phantom fog, and waited. The moisture vanished. For three glorious hours, the window was clear.

Then a crack appeared. Not a big one. A hairline, starting at one of his drill holes and spidering toward the frame. By sunset, the crack had grown teeth. By midnight, a third of the outer pane looked like a frozen lake after a rock hit it.
